Regimeflow

Regimeflow is a term used in hydrology and geomorphology to describe changes in the dominant processes that shape a river's channel or a landscape over time. It refers to a shift from one set of geomorphic conditions and processes to another, often driven by changes in external factors. These external factors can include alterations in water flow, sediment supply, land use, or climate.

When a river experiences a regimeflow, the fundamental ways in which it erodes, transports, and deposits sediment can change. For example, a river might shift from a regime dominated by frequent, low-magnitude floods that carry mostly fine sediment to one characterized by infrequent, high-magnitude floods that transport larger debris and cause significant channel incision. Similarly, in a coastal environment, a regimeflow could signify a transition from a period of sediment accretion to one of erosion due to changes in wave energy or sea level.
