Regalian

Regalian is an adjective and occasional noun relating to a monarch, royal authority, or the symbols and prerogatives of sovereignty. Etymologically it derives from the Latin regalis, meaning "royal," itself from rex, reg- ("king"). In ordinary usage regalian describes things that are regal or befitting a sovereign, such as regalian dress, regalian ceremonies, or the regalian ornaments known collectively as regalia (crowns, sceptres, orbs).

In legal and historical contexts, regalian denotes rights or privileges belonging to the crown. The phrase regalian rights (or the regalian prerogative) traditionally refers to sovereign entitlements over certain revenues, offices or resources—examples include the collection of revenues from vacant ecclesiastical benefices in some medieval and early modern monarchies. A related concept, often called the regalian doctrine, has been applied in colonial and administrative law to justify state ownership or control of lands, mines, or other public resources inherited from former sovereign authority.

The term appears across disciplines: in history and political theory when discussing monarchy and state power, in law when describing crown rights or doctrines, and in cultural description when evoking ceremonial grandeur. Its usage is typically formal and tied to discussions of sovereignty, prerogative, and ceremonial symbolism.
