Refosco

Refosco is a family of red wine grape varieties primarily grown in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy. It is also found in neighboring Slovenia, where it is known as Refošk. The name Refosco is thought to derive from the Latin word "ruscus," meaning "rough." These grapes are known for producing wines that are deep in color, ranging from ruby red to a more intense purplish hue.

Wines made from Refosco grapes are typically characterized by their dry, full-bodied profile. They often exhibit prominent tannins, contributing to a firm structure and aging potential. The aroma and flavor spectrum can include notes of dark fruit such as blackberry, plum, and cherry, often accompanied by hints of earth, spice, and sometimes a subtle herbaceousness. The acidity is generally bright, providing balance to the wine's richness.

While there are several distinct Refosco clones, such as Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso (Red-stemmed Refosco), Refosco Nostrano, and Refosco Veronese, they share common winemaking characteristics. Refosco wines are versatile and can be enjoyed with a variety of foods, particularly robust dishes like grilled meats, stews, and aged cheeses. The grape's adaptability to different terroirs allows for a range of expressions, from simpler, fruit-forward styles to more complex and age-worthy bottlings.
