Reflektorit

Reflektorit are devices or materials designed to reflect light to improve visibility in low-light conditions. In Finnish usage, the term often refers to safety reflectors used on clothing, gear, bicycles, and road infrastructure. The core purpose is to make objects more conspicuous to drivers and pedestrians, reducing the risk of accidents.

The primary mechanism is retroreflection, meaning light is reflected back toward the original light source with minimal scattering. This makes the reflector appear brighter to the observer near the light source, such as a driver’s eyes at night. Common technologies include cube‑corner prism retroreflectors and microprismatic sheets. Traditional glass beads also serve as retroreflective elements, though newer materials often provide higher reflectivity and thinner profiles.

Applications are widespread and include high-visibility clothing (like vests and rain gear), bicycle and pedestrian equipment, road studs, and safety signage. Standards governing reflectivity, color, durability, and performance exist in many regions; in Europe, high-visibility clothing is commonly regulated by EN 20471, while additional standards apply to signs and personal protective equipment.

Limitations of reflektorit include dependency on a light source and visibility conditions: retroreflective materials are not self-luminous and must be illuminated, and performance can degrade if the surface becomes dirty or damaged. For optimal safety, they are often used alongside fluorescent materials and dedicated lighting.

Historically, retroreflective technology emerged in the 20th century and has become a staple of traffic safety and personal protection, continually evolving with advances in material science and manufacturing.
