Referenzbeleuchtung, often translated as reference lighting, is a concept used in various fields, primarily in color science, photography, and lighting design. It refers to a standardized or controlled light source used as a benchmark for comparison. The primary purpose of reference lighting is to ensure consistency and accuracy when evaluating or reproducing colors.

In colorimetry, a reference illuminant is a precisely defined spectral distribution of light that serves as a standard. For example, the CIE (International Commission on Illumination) has defined several standard illuminants (like D65 for daylight) that simulate different types of natural or artificial light. These illuminants allow for the objective measurement and comparison of color under consistent conditions. Without a reference illuminant, the perceived color of an object would vary depending on the ambient lighting, making objective color assessment impossible.

In photography and digital imaging, reference lighting is crucial for color calibration. By using a known reference light source to illuminate a color chart or target, photographers and retouchers can create profiles for their cameras and monitors. This calibration process ensures that the colors captured by the camera are accurately represented on the display and in the final output.
