Redoxgradienteja refers to a spatial variation in the oxidation-reduction potential within a system. This concept is fundamental in understanding chemical processes in environments where electron transfer is a key factor. These gradients can occur in various natural and engineered settings, including soil, sediments, groundwater, and biological systems.

The existence of a redox gradient implies that different chemical species will be stable and react in distinct zones. For instance, in a natural environment like a wetland, oxygen is typically present in surface layers, creating an oxidizing zone. Deeper within the sediment, oxygen is depleted, leading to reducing conditions where other electron acceptors like nitrate, sulfate, or even carbon dioxide become dominant.

The measurement of redox potential, often expressed in millivolts (mV), helps to delineate these zones. Low, negative mV values generally indicate strongly reducing conditions, while high, positive mV values suggest oxidizing conditions. The transition between these zones can be sharp or gradual, depending on factors such as diffusion rates, microbial activity, and the presence of reactive substances.

Redox gradients are crucial for biogeochemical cycling, influencing the transformation and mobility of elements like nitrogen, sulfur, iron, and manganese. They also play a significant role in contaminant fate and transport, affecting the degradation or persistence of organic pollutants and the solubility of heavy metals.
