Redningsselskap

Redningsselskapet, commonly known as RS, is a Norwegian non-profit organization dedicated to maritime safety and sea rescue along the coast of Norway. Founded in 1907 by shipowners and sailors, it has grown into a national resource for lifesaving at sea.

The organization conducts search and rescue operations in cooperation with the Norwegian Coastal Administration and the Coast Guard, and it works to prevent incidents through safety education, risk awareness campaigns, and advisory services for seafarers and recreational mariners. RS maintains a fleet of all-weather lifeboats and fast rescue boats stationed at coastal bases.

RS is financed through a mix of member contributions, private donations, corporate partnerships, legacies, and government subsidies or service contracts. It is governed by a board and a network of regional offices, employing professional crews as well as trained volunteers.

In addition to immediate rescue work, Redningsselskapet develops training programs, produces safety guidance, and participates in international search-and-rescue exercises. The organization collaborates with public authorities and international rescue services to improve maritime safety and response capabilities.
