Redningskrans

Redningskrans is a circular buoyant rescue device used on water to aid a person in distress. It is designed to be thrown to a person overboard and to provide immediate buoyancy so they can stay afloat until help arrives. The device is usually bright red or orange to maximize visibility, and is often equipped with reflective markings.

Construction and components: A redningskrans consists of a rigid or semi-rigid ring made of foam or an inflatable bladder, enclosed in a durable outer cover. A rope or throw line is attached around the outside; the line length varies, commonly several meters, allowing the rescuer to pull the casualty to safety. The outer cover may include a labeled identification and a safety strap for carrying.

Usage: The rescuer throws the redningskrans toward the person in the water. The person grasps the ring or the throw line, and the rescuer pulls them in. The device is designed to be quickly deployed with minimal handling to reduce the risk to the rescuer. After use, the lifebuoy should be returned to its holder for easy reuse.

Placement and regulation: Redningskranser are commonly installed on ships, at harbors, piers, swimming pools and other water-adjacent facilities. They are kept in clearly marked, easily accessible holders and are subject to regular inspection and maintenance to ensure buoyancy and rope integrity. Many countries require lifebuoys to be within arm's reach and clearly signposted.
