Redningsfløyter

Redningsfløyter are compact signaling devices used to attract attention in emergencies at sea or on land. They are commonly fitted to life jackets, lifeboats, rafts, and other safety gear, and may also be carried separately by walkers, hikers and climbers. The primary purpose is to produce a loud, piercing sound that can be heard over wind, waves, and background noise, enabling responders to locate a person in distress or to alert nearby vessels.

Most rescue whistles are pea whistles, which use a small ball (the pea) to create a trill and louder tone. Pea-less designs rely on the air flow alone and tend to be more resistant to moisture clogging. They come in metal and plastic constructions and are often fitted with a lanyard for quick access.

Usage and signaling patterns: A whistle is typically blown by short bursts or notes to maximize distance and clarity; in maritime practice, certain sound patterns are used to indicate distress or to attract attention, though exact conventions vary by country and vessel type. Regulatory and practical notes: In many countries, a whistle is a recommended or required item on personal flotation devices or life-saving equipment. Effectiveness depends on conditions—noise from surf, wind, rain, and distance can limit audible range. Training and regular checks help ensure reliability.
