Rederier is the Danish and Norwegian term for shipping companies that own or operate vessels to transport goods by sea. They provide freight transport services and typically manage a range of activities within the logistics chain, including fleet acquisition, crewing, maintenance, chartering of ships, and cargo handling. Rederier can be categorized into liner operators, which run regular routes on fixed schedules with published tariffs, and tramp operators, which book voyages on an irregular basis as demand dictates.

Historically, the modern rederi emerged in the 19th century with the growth of steam-powered trade and global shipping. The containerization revolution of the mid-20th century transformed the industry, enabling large-scale economies, rapid port turns, and substantial consolidation through mergers and alliances. Today, rederier operate diverse fleets—container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, and roll-on/roll-off vessels—and increasingly offer integrated logistics services that connect sea transport with inland shipping and rail.

Markets are highly global and competitive, with revenue mainly from freight charges and, for some operators, vessel charters or ownership. They operate under regulatory frameworks set by international bodies such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO), including SOLAS and MARPOL conventions, as well as port state control and national rules. Environmental and efficiency pressures drive decarbonization efforts, slow steaming, and fleet modernization.
