Their services can be organized as liner services with regular routes or tramp shipping where ships sail to varying destinations based on demand.

Corporate form: Many rederier are structured as aktiebolag or equivalent limited companies. They can be privately held or publicly listed. In addition to vessel operation, they may engage in logistics, port services, and ship management. They operate under international and national regulations such as SOLAS, MARPOL, and the Maritime Labour Convention.

History: The term has been used since the early modern period to describe commercial fleets that supported sea trade. The rise of steam propulsion in the 19th century and globalization in the 20th century shaped modern rederier, including consolidation into large multinational groups.
