Recategorization

Recategorization is the process of moving an item from one category to another within a classification scheme or taxonomy. It is used across domains such as libraries, information management, e-commerce, biology, and policy to reflect updated understanding, new evidence, changes in criteria, or corrections of prior errors.

The practice typically involves governance or stewardship, evaluation of how well an item fits each category, and a decision to assign the item to a new category. After the decision, metadata, ontologies, and taxonomy are updated, and changes are implemented in information systems. Documentation of the rationale and versioning or audit trails are often required to preserve data lineage. In some cases, automated reclassification uses rules or machine learning, supplemented by human review to ensure accuracy.

Recategorization can affect searchability, filtering, recommendations, and analytics. It may improve consistency and discoverability when categories better reflect current understanding, but it can also create confusion if users encounter sudden changes or inconsistent historical labeling. Therefore, communication and documentation are important, including notes about the change and its impact on past records.

Examples include a library moving a book from one subject area to another after reevaluation of its content, an online retailer realigning a product from one category to another to match a revised taxonomy, or a dataset re-labeled with a more precise discipline. In governance terms, recategorization is a form of reclassification that emphasizes category membership rather than merely renaming categories.
