Common strategies include calendar-based rebalancing, which operates at set intervals, and threshold-based rebalancing, which triggers trades when allocations move beyond specified bands. Costs such as transaction fees and taxes can offset benefits, and frequent rebalancing may incur tax inefficiency or market impact. Proponents emphasize discipline and risk management; critics warn of overtrading and imperfect forecasts.

In computing and data systems, rebalancing redistributes load, data, or resources to maintain even distribution as demand and capacity change. Load balancers may rebalance traffic across servers; database shards or partitions may be moved to different nodes to balance storage and query load; orchestration platforms rebalance containers when nodes join or leave or when resources are reclaimed. Techniques include consistent hashing, monitoring-based triggers, and adaptive algorithms.

In logistics and retail, inventory rebalancing moves stock between locations to align supply with demand, reduce stockouts, and minimize excess inventory. Rebalancing decisions consider transportation costs, lead times, and demand forecasts, with automatic replenishment and central planning as common approaches.

Rebalancing is typically automated in modern systems but requires careful tuning of frequency, thresholds, and triggers to balance the gains in balance with costs and potential unintended consequences.
