Reapropriação

Reapropriação, often translated as "reappropriation" or "appropriation" in English, is a concept that describes the act of taking something that has been used or defined by a dominant group and using it in a new way, often to subvert its original meaning or to reclaim it for a marginalized group. This process involves a deliberate act of taking back or repurposing cultural symbols, language, images, or other elements that may have been used negatively or to oppress a particular community.

The core of reapropriação lies in its transformative intent. It is not simply copying or borrowing, but rather an active process of reinterpretation and redefinition. For example, a term or slur that was once used to demean a group can be reapropriated by that group and used with pride or irony, stripping it of its power to harm. Similarly, cultural artifacts or artistic styles that were once exoticized or commodified by outsiders can be reclaimed and recontextualized by their original creators or inheritors, asserting ownership and cultural significance.

The effectiveness and reception of reapropriação can be complex and debated. It is often seen as a form of resistance and empowerment, allowing marginalized communities to challenge dominant narratives and assert their own identities.
