ReO3

Rhenium trioxide, with the chemical formula ReO3, is an inorganic compound and a binary oxide of rhenium. It is a lustrous, metallic-looking solid with a characteristic ruby-red color. ReO3 crystallizes in a cubic structure that is related to the perovskite structure, specifically as the parent compound of the perovskite family. In this structure, rhenium atoms occupy the corners of a cube, and oxygen atoms sit at the face-centered positions, forming a three-dimensional network of ReO6 octahedra. Each rhenium atom is coordinated by six oxygen atoms, and each oxygen atom is shared by two rhenium atoms.

ReO3 is known for its unusual electrical properties. It is a conductor of electricity at room temperature, exhibiting metallic conductivity. This conductivity arises from the delocalization of electrons within the ReO6 octahedra. The compound is relatively stable in air but can be oxidized by strong oxidizing agents. It is insoluble in water but can react with alkaline solutions. ReO3 is often prepared by the thermal decomposition of ammonium perrhenate or by the reaction of rhenium metal with oxygen at elevated temperatures.
