Rawlplugs

Rawlplugs are a type of wall plug or anchor used in construction and DIY applications to allow screws to be fixed into masonry and other brittle materials. They are typically made of plastic and are designed to expand when a screw is driven into them. This expansion wedges the plug firmly against the inside of the drilled hole, creating a secure anchor point.

The principle behind a Rawlplug is straightforward. A hole is drilled into the wall material, such as brick, concrete, or plasterboard, of a diameter slightly larger than the Rawlplug itself. The Rawlplug is then inserted into the hole. When a screw is subsequently driven into the Rawlplug, its threads engage with the material of the plug, forcing it to expand. This expansion presses outwards against the walls of the drilled hole, generating friction and a mechanical grip that holds the screw and any attached object in place.

Rawlplugs come in various sizes and types to suit different load requirements and wall materials. Some are designed for light-duty applications, while others are more robust for heavier loads. For instance, specific types exist for plasterboard which might incorporate wings that fold out on the reverse side of the board for increased holding power. The correct selection and installation of a Rawlplug are crucial for ensuring a secure and safe fixing.
