Ravintoverkostot, sometimes translated as food webs, describe the complex feeding relationships within an ecological community. Instead of a simple linear food chain, a food web illustrates that most organisms consume multiple types of food and are themselves prey for several different predators. This interconnectedness shows how energy and nutrients flow through an ecosystem.

At the base of most food webs are producers, typically photosynthetic organisms like plants and algae, which convert sunlight into energy. Primary consumers, or herbivores, feed directly on these producers. Secondary consumers, which can be carnivores or omnivores, eat primary consumers. Tertiary consumers are at a higher trophic level, preying on secondary consumers. Detritivores and decomposers, such as fungi and bacteria, play a crucial role by breaking down dead organic matter from all trophic levels, returning essential nutrients to the soil or water, where they can be utilized by producers, thus completing the cycle.

The stability and health of an ecosystem are greatly influenced by the structure of its food web. A diverse food web with many different species at each trophic level is generally more resilient to disturbances. If one food source becomes scarce, consumers can often switch to another, preventing widespread population crashes. Conversely, the removal of a single species, especially a keystone species that has a disproportionately large effect on its environment relative to its abundance, can have cascading negative impacts throughout the entire food web. Understanding these intricate connections is vital for conservation efforts and managing natural resources.
