Ratsuväenä

Ratsuväenä is a Finnish grassroots organization that emerged in the early 2010s. Its name, which translates loosely to “the rats' army,” was chosen to convey a sense of resilience and collective effort among its members. The group arose in response to growing discontent with perceived shortages in social services and the increasing influence of multinational corporations in local markets.

The organization began as a small forum for young professionals and students in Helsinki, but it quickly expanded to other major cities. According to its own statements, Ratsuväenä seeks to promote civic engagement through community projects, public debates, and a series of campaigns targeting local governance. In practice, it has organized neighborhood clean‑ups, free legal advice clinics, and public lectures on environmental policy. It also runs an online platform where supporters can share resources and coordinate volunteer efforts.

Despite its informal structure, Ratsuväenä has attracted attention from local media. Critics argue that the organization’s use of provocative language might alienate potential supporters, while supporters praise its commitment to transparency and decentralised decision‑making. The group does not appear to receive significant funding from external donors, relying instead on small donations from members and in‑kind donations from local businesses.

As of 2024, Ratsuväenä remains an independent, non‑partisan entity. Its activities are largely focused on citizen empowerment and local activism, avoiding formal affiliation with national political parties. The organization continues to grow its membership base and expand its reach across Finland.
