Ratsutamiskäibad

Ratsutamiskäibad, often translated as riding gaiters or chaps, are protective leg coverings worn by equestrians. They are designed to protect the rider's lower legs and the horse's sides from wear and tear caused by the saddle and stirrup leathers, as well as from dirt and debris. Traditionally, ratsutamiskäibad were made from leather, offering durability and a classic aesthetic. Modern versions can be found in various materials, including synthetic leathers, vinyl, and even fabric, catering to different preferences and climates.

The primary function of ratsutamiskäibad is to prevent chafing and rubbing, which can occur during extended riding sessions. They create a barrier between the rider's clothing and the horse's coat, reducing friction. This is particularly important for disciplines like dressage or endurance riding where long hours in the saddle are common. Beyond protection, ratsutamiskäibad can also contribute to a rider's comfort by providing a more uniform surface against the saddle. They are typically worn over riding boots and cover the lower leg from just below the knee to the top of the boot. Different styles exist, from full chaps that extend to the thigh to half chaps that cover only the lower leg and ankle.
