Rathcroghan

Rathcroghan is an archaeological complex located in County Roscommon, Ireland. It is a significant historical and mythological site, often associated with the ancient province of Connacht. The site is most famously linked to Queen Medb (or Maeve), a powerful warrior queen from Irish mythology, and is believed to be the location of her royal seat.

The Rathcroghan complex encompasses a variety of earthworks and monuments spread across the landscape. Key features include Rath Cruachan itself, a large ringfort, which is thought to be the central settlement. Other notable sites within the complex are the Cave of Cruachan, an entrance to the Otherworld in mythology, and a collection of burial mounds, including an unusual standing stone known as the Ogham stone of Dun na n-Ua, which bears an inscription in the Ogham alphabet.

Historically, Rathcroghan was the capital of the Uí Fiachrach dynasty and later the seat of the kings of Connacht. Its importance is reflected in its mention in numerous Irish sagas, particularly the Táin Bó Cúailnge (The Cattle Raid of Cooley), where it plays a central role in the narrative.
