Rataslukitus

Rataslukitus is a mechanical term used to describe a method or device that immobilizes a gear, gear wheel, or gear train to prevent rotation. The word comes from Finnish, combining ratas (gear) and lukitus (locking). In practice, rataslukitus encompasses a range of locking implementations designed to secure gears during assembly, maintenance, or operation, and to provide safety or position-holding in machines.

Locking methods can be mechanical or combined with actuation. Common forms include inserting a pin or bolt into gear hubs or shafts, clamping or wedging devices that grip a gear to a shaft, and interference fits or locking collars that prevent relative motion. Some systems use keys, set screws, or threaded fasteners to fix gear positions, while others employ spring-loaded or hydraulic/pneumatic actuators to engage and release a lock automatically. The exact design depends on gear size, load, speed, and the operating environment.

Rataslukitus is applied across various industries, including manufacturing, robotics, and equipment maintenance. It is frequently used to ensure safe handling during service, to prevent unintended gear movement during setup, and to hold gear trains in a known position under load. Proper implementation requires adherence to lockout/tagout procedures and attention to compatibility with surrounding components to avoid damage or injury.
