Rasvoituksen

Rasvoituksen is a Finnish term referring to the process of applying a fat- or oil-based layer to surfaces in order to reduce friction, protect against corrosion, and displace moisture. It is associated with other terms such as voitelu and rasvaus, but rasvoitus emphasizes the coating of a surface with a fatty or oily layer rather than active, continuous lubrication alone. The term can be used across technical, industrial, and historical contexts.

The process typically involves cleaning the surface, selecting a suitable greasing medium, and applying the coating by brush, spray, immersion, or dipping. The choice of substance depends on the material, operating conditions, and required longevity. Substances range from animal fats and mineral oils to modern synthetic lubricants and waxy coatings. Substrate compatibility, viscosity, and the intended environment (temperature, humidity, exposure to chemicals) guide the method and material selection.

Applications of rasvoitus include protection of metal parts in machinery, bearings, chains, and fasteners, as well as in historical firearm maintenance and other situations where surface protection and moisture exclusion are important. In contemporary practice, rasvoitus often falls under broader lubrication and corrosion-protection strategies, with emphasis on safety, storage, and reapplication intervals.

Environmental and safety considerations are important, as used greases must be disposed of properly, and some substances can be flammable or suitable only for non-food-contact surfaces. The concept remains part of older engineering maintenance traditions while elements of rasvoitus continue to be integrated into modern lubrication regimes.
