Rasvauuttomenetelmät, known in English as fat extraction methods, refers to a range of techniques used to separate and isolate fat from various substances. These methods are employed across diverse fields, including food processing, chemical analysis, and industrial applications. The primary goal is typically to obtain pure fat or to remove fat from a matrix for further analysis or processing.

One common method is solvent extraction. This involves using organic solvents such as hexane, ether, or chloroform to dissolve the fat. The substance containing the fat is mixed with the solvent, and the fat dissolves into it. The solvent-fat mixture is then separated from the solid residue, and the solvent is subsequently evaporated, leaving behind the extracted fat. The choice of solvent depends on the type of fat and the matrix it is being extracted from, as well as safety and environmental considerations.

Another approach is mechanical pressing, particularly used in the food industry for extracting oils from seeds and fruits like olives or soybeans. This method utilizes physical pressure to squeeze out the fat. Sometimes, a combination of mechanical pressing and solvent extraction is used to maximize the yield of fat.

Pressurized fluid extraction (PFE), also known as accelerated solvent extraction (ASE), is a more modern technique that uses solvents at elevated temperatures and pressures. This allows for faster extraction times and reduced solvent consumption compared to traditional methods. Supercritical fluid extraction, often using carbon dioxide, is another advanced technique that leverages the unique properties of fluids above their critical temperature and pressure to efficiently extract lipids without the need for toxic organic solvents.
