Rasatala

Rasatala is a concept in Hindu cosmology, referring to one of the seven lower realms or subterranean worlds. It is typically depicted as the sixth level of the netherworld, situated below the earth's surface. Each of the seven patalas is believed to be inhabited by various classes of beings, often serpent-like entities or demons. Rasatala itself is often associated with the Nagas, a mythical race of celestial serpents.

The description of Rasatala varies slightly in different Puranic texts, but generally it is a dark and possibly humid region. It is considered a place of enjoyment for the inhabitants, though not necessarily a paradise. The lords of these realms are often depicted as powerful beings who rule over their respective domains. The seven patalas, in descending order, are Atala, Vitala, Sutala, Talatala, Mahatala, Rasatala, and Patala. These realms are not simply geographical locations but also represent different states of existence or spiritual planes. Understanding Rasatala requires an awareness of the broader Hindu cosmology, which includes the upper realms (svarga) and the material world (bhuloka). The concept of the patalas serves to illustrate the vastness and complexity of the universe as envisioned in Hindu scriptures.
