Rapautumisympäristö refers to the environmental conditions that promote the weathering of rocks and minerals. These conditions are broadly categorized into physical weathering, chemical weathering, and biological weathering. Physical weathering involves the mechanical breakdown of rocks into smaller pieces without changing their chemical composition. Factors contributing to physical weathering include temperature changes causing expansion and contraction, frost wedging where water seeps into cracks, freezes, and expands, and abrasion from wind-blown sand or glaciers.

Chemical weathering, on the other hand, involves the alteration of the chemical composition of rocks and minerals. This process is driven by reactions with water, oxygen, and acids. Hydration, where minerals absorb water and swell, leading to disintegration, is a form of chemical weathering. Oxidation, particularly the rusting of iron-bearing minerals, also weakens rocks. Carbonation occurs when carbon dioxide dissolves in water to form carbonic acid, which can dissolve carbonate rocks like limestone. Hydrolysis involves the reaction of minerals with water, breaking down their structure.

Biological weathering is the breakdown of rocks caused by living organisms. Plant roots can grow into cracks, widening them and exerting pressure. Microorganisms like bacteria and fungi can secrete acids that dissolve rock surfaces. Burrowing animals can also expose rocks to weathering agents.
