Ranbinding

Ranbinding is a term used in fantasy literature and role-playing games to describe a binding technique that combines runes, sigils, and physical binding materials to constrain or control energies, artifacts, or beings. It differs from ordinary binding in that it relies on a codified system of symbols that encode the terms of the seal, including duration, strength, and release conditions. A ranbinding is typically created by inscribing runes on a binding medium—cord, metal band, or parchment—and arranging them in a prescribed pattern that must be honored during the ritual.

The practice draws on imagined traditions of runic magic and sealing rites. In most depictions, ranbinding requires preparation, including a binding circle, a focus for the caster, and a set of auxiliary sigils that govern containment and release. The effectiveness depends on precision in inscription, the quality of the binding materials, and the caster’s alignment with the symbolic rules. Breaks in the ritual or imperfect symbols can weaken the seal or cause backfire.

Ranbinding is often used in stories and games to seal demonic entities, imprison powerful artifacts, or constrain magical pacts under defined terms. Variants exist across settings, with some traditions emphasizing permanence, while others allow for gradual weakening or renegotiation of terms.
