Radiojoditerapiassa
Radiojoditerapiassa, also known as radioactive iodine therapy, is a medical treatment that utilizes radioactive isotopes of iodine to treat certain conditions. The most common application of radiojoditerapiassa is in the management of hyperthyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. In this context, radioactive iodine, typically Iodine-131, is administered orally, usually in capsule or liquid form. The thyroid gland naturally absorbs iodine from the bloodstream, and the radioactive iodine is selectively taken up by the thyroid cells. Once inside the thyroid cells, the radiation emitted by Iodine-131 damages and destroys these cells, thereby reducing the overproduction of thyroid hormones.
Radiojoditerapiassa is also employed in the treatment of differentiated thyroid cancer, specifically papillary and follicular types.
