Radiaaneina

Radiaaneina is a proposed clade within radiolarian protists, a group of single-celled eukaryotes known for their siliceous skeletons. The name is intended to reflect a radial skeletal theme observed in some member taxa, and the concept emerged to describe a subset of genera sharing particular skeletal architectures and microtubule organization. However, the exact circumscription of Radiaaneina varies among sources.

In taxonomic practice, Radiaaneina is considered provisional or contested. Some classifications treat it as a formal subclade within Radiolaria, while others place the included genera in adjacent lineages or do not recognize the clade at all. Molecular data available so far have been inconclusive, and there is no universal consensus on which taxa belong to Radiaaneina.

Morphologically, members are typically free-living, marine, planktonic protists with siliceous tests. Descriptions emphasize radial or quasi-radial skeletal elements and lattice-like internal frameworks. Reproduction is largely asexual, with occasional reports of sexual stages in certain taxa. Ecologically, Radiaaneina-type radiolarians are common in nutrient-rich surface waters and contribute to marine plankton as predators of smaller protists, as well as to silica-based microfossil assemblages that are important for biostratigraphy and paleoceanographic studies.
