RackPosition refers to the designated location of an item or equipment on a storage or equipment rack. It is typically defined by a combination of a rack identifier and a position code that locates the item within that rack. The concept is used across warehousing, data centers, and manufacturing to enable precise storage, retrieval, and asset management.

In warehousing, rack positions are organized into racks, bays, levels, and slots. Each position is labeled with an alphanumeric code and may be represented as coordinates such as Rack 12, Bay 3, Level 2. Inventory systems map RackPosition to stock records in a warehouse management system (WMS), supporting accurate picking, replenishment, and cycle counting. Consistent positioning allows for optimized pick paths and space utilization.

In data centers, a rack position identifies the physical slot within a server rack where a device occupies a specific rack unit (U) height. The position is expressed by a rack number, bay, and U height, and is used for asset management, capacity planning, cabling, and maintenance scheduling. Standardized labeling helps with asset tracking and interoperability across facilities and vendors.
