Rachenabstrich, also known as a throat swab or pharyngeal swab, is a common medical diagnostic procedure used to collect a sample from the throat. This sample is then typically sent to a laboratory for analysis to detect the presence of various pathogens, such as bacteria or viruses, or to identify other abnormalities.

The procedure itself is usually quick and straightforward. A healthcare professional will use a sterile cotton-tipped swab to gently rub the surface of the throat, including the tonsils and the back of the pharynx. Care is taken to avoid touching the tongue or the sides of the mouth to ensure the sample is representative of the throat area. The swab is then placed in a sterile container, often with a transport medium to preserve the sample, and sent for testing.

Rachenabstriche are frequently performed to diagnose conditions like strep throat (caused by Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria), influenza, or COVID-19. They can also be used to identify other infections or to check for carriers of certain microorganisms. The results of the throat swab can guide appropriate treatment, such as the prescription of antibiotics for bacterial infections. The process is generally well-tolerated, though some individuals may experience a brief gagging sensation during the swab.
