RNA säätöelementit, or RNA regulatory elements, are sequences within RNA molecules that control their own function or the function of other molecules. These elements are crucial for the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression, influencing processes like RNA stability, localization, translation, and processing. They are diverse in their structure and mechanism of action, often forming specific secondary or tertiary structures that allow them to interact with proteins or other nucleic acids.

One common type of RNA regulatory element is the cis-acting element, which is located on the same RNA molecule it regulates. These can include sequences that bind microRNAs (miRNAs) or RNA-binding proteins (RBPs), thereby affecting mRNA stability or translation efficiency. For example, binding sites for miRNAs in the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of an mRNA can lead to its degradation or inhibition of translation. Similarly, RBP binding sites can recruit factors that either stabilize or destabilize the RNA.

Trans-acting elements, on the other hand, are RNA molecules that regulate other RNA molecules. Small non-coding RNAs, such as miRNAs and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), are prime examples. These molecules typically guide effector complexes to target mRNAs, leading to their cleavage or translational repression. Other trans-acting RNAs include long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), which can interact with DNA, RNA, or proteins to modulate gene expression at various levels, including chromatin structure and splicing.

The discovery and characterization of RNA regulatory elements have significantly advanced our understanding of gene regulation beyond transcriptional control. These elements represent a complex layer of biological control and are implicated in a wide range of cellular processes and diseases, making them important targets for therapeutic intervention.
