RNApolymeraasientsyymi, often simply referred to as RNA polymerase, is a crucial enzyme responsible for synthesizing RNA molecules from a DNA template. This process, known as transcription, is fundamental to gene expression in all living organisms. RNA polymerase binds to specific regions of DNA called promoters, unwinds the double helix, and then reads one strand of the DNA, known as the template strand. As it moves along the DNA, it catalyzes the formation of phosphodiester bonds between incoming ribonucleotides, which are complementary to the bases on the DNA template. The enzyme adds these ribonucleotides one by one to the growing RNA chain, releasing pyrophosphate with each addition.

There are different types of RNA polymerases in most organisms, each specializing in transcribing different classes of RNA. For example, in eukaryotes, RNA polymerase I transcribes ribosomal RNA genes, RNA polymerase II transcribes messenger RNA (mRNA) precursors and most small nuclear RNAs, and RNA polymerase III transcribes transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, the 5S rRNA gene, and other small RNAs. Bacteria typically have a single type of RNA polymerase that transcribes all types of RNA, although it associates with different sigma factors to recognize different promoter sequences. The accurate and efficient functioning of RNA polymerase is essential for cellular life, as it is the first step in converting genetic information stored in DNA into functional proteins and regulatory molecules.
