RDIMM stands for Registered Dual In-line Memory Module. These memory modules feature a register chip that buffers the data signals between the memory controller and the DRAM chips on the module. LRDIMM stands for Load-Reduced Dual In-line Memory Module. LRDIMMs take the concept of signal buffering further than RDIMMs. They incorporate a memory buffer chip that not only registers the signals but also isolates the memory controller from the DRAM chips. This isolation significantly reduces the electrical load on the memory controller, enabling even greater memory capacities and configurations than RDIMMs. LRDIMMs are particularly beneficial in systems requiring very large amounts of RAM, such as large-scale data servers, scientific computing, and high-performance computing environments. They allow for more memory channels and a higher number of DIMMs per channel.
