RDHs

Registered dental hygienists (RDHs) are licensed dental professionals who provide preventive oral care and education, working in collaboration with dentists to promote oral health and prevent disease.

Education and licensure vary by country and state. In the United States, RDHs typically complete an accredited dental hygiene program earning an associate or bachelor’s degree, then pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and a state or regional clinical examination to obtain licensure. Ongoing continuing education is usually required to renew the license.

Typical duties include dental prophylaxis (professional cleaning), scaling and root planing where permitted, applying sealants and fluoride, taking and developing dental radiographs, assessing periodontal status, documenting medical and dental histories, and providing patient instruction on oral hygiene, diet, and tobacco cessation.

RDHs work in private dental practices, community health centers, schools, hospitals, and public health settings. They perform screenings and contribute to preventive care plans, often coordinating with dentists and other health professionals to manage patients’ oral health.

Regulation and professional standards are overseen by state boards and national associations such as the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA). The scope of practice and permissible procedures vary by jurisdiction, and RDHs are expected to follow ethical guidelines and pursue ongoing continuing education.
