RAWtiedostomuoto refers to unprocessed image data captured directly by a digital camera's sensor. Unlike formats like JPEG, which undergo in-camera processing and compression, RAW files retain all the original information. This includes a wider dynamic range, more color depth, and greater flexibility for post-processing.

Each camera manufacturer typically has its own proprietary RAW file format, such as Canon's .CR2 or .CR3, Nikon's .NEF, Sony's .ARW, and Adobe's .DNG, which is an attempt at a universal standard. Because these files are not yet rendered into a viewable image, they require specialized software to open and edit. This software interprets the sensor data and allows photographers to adjust parameters like exposure, white balance, and color saturation with minimal loss of quality.

The primary advantage of shooting in RAW is the extensive control it offers in post-production. Photographers can recover shadow and highlight detail that would be lost in a compressed format. However, RAW files are significantly larger than JPEGs, requiring more storage space and processing power. They also need to be converted to a standard format like JPEG or TIFF before they can be widely shared or printed. In essence, RAW files are the digital equivalent of a photographic negative, providing a rich starting point for creative image editing.
