RAID, which stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks, is a data storage technology that combines multiple physical disk drives into one or more logical units. This is done for purposes of data redundancy, performance improvement, or both. RAID configurations are often referred to by their level, such as RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10, each offering different trade-offs between redundancy and performance.

RAID 0, also known as striping, splits data across multiple disks without any redundancy. This offers improved read and write speeds but provides no fault tolerance; if one disk fails, all data is lost. RAID 1, or mirroring, duplicates data onto two or more disks. This provides excellent redundancy, as the array can continue to operate if one disk fails, but the storage capacity is halved.

RAID 5 uses block-level striping with parity distributed across all drives. It offers a good balance of performance and redundancy, requiring at least three drives. If one drive fails, the data can be rebuilt from the parity information. RAID 10 combines mirroring and striping, offering both high performance and redundancy by mirroring striped sets. This typically requires at least four drives.

The choice of RAID level depends on the specific needs of the user or organization, considering factors such as cost, performance requirements, and the acceptable level of risk for data loss.
