R133a, also known as 1,1,1-trichloroethane, is a haloalkane with the chemical formula C2H3Cl3. It is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor that is volatile and non-flammable. Historically, R133a was widely used as a solvent, a cleaning agent, and a refrigerant. Its properties made it effective in degreasing metal parts, in aerosol propellants, and as a component in adhesives and coatings.

However, due to its significant environmental impact, the use of R133a has been largely phased out. It is an ozone-depleting substance, contributing to the thinning of the Earth's ozone layer. Additionally, R133a is a greenhouse gas, though its atmospheric lifetime is relatively short compared to some other potent greenhouse gases.
