Qmenetelmän is a Swedish term that translates to "the Q method" or "Q methodology." It is a research method used to study and understand the subjective perspectives and opinions of individuals. Developed by William Stephenson in the mid-20th century, Q methodology combines elements of qualitative and quantitative research.

The core of Q methodology involves participants ranking a set of statements, typically presented on cards or in a digital format, according to their agreement or disagreement. These statements are designed to cover a particular topic or issue. Participants are asked to arrange these statements into a forced-choice distribution, often resembling a normal curve, meaning they must place a certain number of statements in strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, and strongly disagree categories.

The data collected from these rankings is then analyzed using factor analysis. This statistical technique groups participants who have similar ranking patterns together into "factors" or "viewpoints." Each factor represents a distinct perspective or opinion held by a subset of the participants. The analysis helps to identify the different subjective viewpoints that exist within a group regarding a specific issue.

Q methodology is employed across various fields, including psychology, political science, communication studies, and education. It is particularly useful for exploring complex social phenomena, understanding public opinion, and identifying diverse perspectives on controversial topics. Its strength lies in its ability to reveal the structure of subjective experience rather than simply measuring attitudes.
