Qari

A Qari is an Arabic term meaning a reciter, specifically a person who recites the Qur'an aloud with precise pronunciation and adherence to tajweed, the rules governing Qur'an recitation. In Islamic contexts, a Qari may perform in mosques, at religious gatherings, or in Qur'an schools and competitions, and may be associated with a particular tradition of recitation.

The practice of Qur'an recitation is guided by tajweed and by the canonical methods of recitation known as qira'at. A Qari may train in one or more qira'at, with Hafs 'an 'Asim being the most widespread in many regions. Other authentic recitations include Warsh 'an Nafi' and Qalun 'an Nafi', among others. The qira'at tradition is transmitted through chains of narrators (isnad), and scholars classify these recitations into recognized categories, commonly seven, eight, or more narrations.

In practice, Qaris may teach Tajweed and Qur'an memorization (hifz) and participate in recitation programs on radio, television, or in live events. While an imam leads prayers, a Qari’s role is not limited to worship; many Qaris also give lessons, recordings, or public performances, emphasizing vocal quality, pronunciation, and melodic rhythm (tartil).

Qari can also be a personal name or surname in parts of the Muslim world. The term underscores skill in reading and reciting the Qur'an and is distinct from related roles such as hafiz (one who memorizes the Qur'an) or imam (a prayer leader), though individuals may hold multiple roles.
