Pústula

Pústula is a medical term referring to a small, raised, pus-filled bump on the skin. These lesions are a common manifestation of various inflammatory or infectious skin conditions. Typically, a pustule is characterized by its distinct white or yellowish center, which contains a collection of white blood cells, bacteria, and dead skin cells. The surrounding skin may appear red and inflamed.

Pustules can vary in size, from pinpoint to several millimeters in diameter. They can occur individually or in clusters and may be found on any part of the body, though they are often seen on the face, chest, and back. Common causes of pustules include acne, folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles), and certain types of dermatitis. Bacterial infections, such as staphylococcal infections, can also lead to the formation of pustules.

While generally harmless and often resolving on their own, pustules can sometimes be a sign of a more significant infection or inflammatory process. It is advisable to consult a healthcare professional if pustules are widespread, painful, accompanied by fever, or do not improve within a reasonable timeframe. Medical treatment may involve topical or oral antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, or other therapies depending on the underlying cause. Squeezing or picking at pustules is generally discouraged as it can lead to increased inflammation, infection, and scarring.
