It arises from imbalances within the rotating mass or from the geometry of the components involved. In engines, for example, a pöördevärin can be caused by an uneven distribution of mass in the crankshaft or connecting rods, or by the angular displacement of the connecting rods relative to the crankshaft, especially in V-type or radial engine configurations.

The effect of pöördevärin is a complex vibration pattern that can manifest as a shaking or oscillating motion. This vibration is not solely along the axis of rotation but can also involve tilting or wobbling. The frequency of this vibration is typically related to the rotational speed of the component.
