Põhühikutest, also known as the Estonian national epic, is a collection of traditional folk songs that form the foundation of Estonian oral literature. Originating from the rural communities of Estonia, these songs were primarily passed down through generations by oral tradition before being recorded and studied in the 19th and 20th centuries. The term *põhühikutest* translates loosely to "from the depths" or "from the roots," reflecting the songs' deep connection to Estonian cultural identity and history.

The epic consists of numerous individual songs, often grouped into cycles that tell stories of heroes, battles, and mythological figures. One of the most famous cycles is the *Kalevipoeg* (Son of Kalev), which follows the adventures of the legendary hero Kalevipoeg as he battles mythical creatures, foreign invaders, and supernatural forces. Other cycles include *Vana Tõnu* (Old Tõnu), *Kalev* (Kalev), and *Lemmik* (Lemmik), each contributing to the rich tapestry of Estonian folklore. These songs often feature recurring motifs such as battles, love, nature, and the struggle between good and evil.

The collection was first systematically studied and transcribed by 19th-century scholars like Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald, who compiled the *Kalevipoeg* epic in 1857–1861. This work became a cornerstone of Estonian national identity, particularly during the 19th-century national awakening when Estonia sought to preserve its cultural heritage amid foreign domination. The songs reflect the Estonian worldview, emphasizing themes of freedom, resilience, and harmony with nature.

Today, *põhühikutest* remains an important part of Estonian cultural heritage, studied in schools and celebrated in festivals. While some songs have been adapted into modern literature, theater, and music, their original oral form continues to be cherished as a living tradition. The epic serves as a testament to Estonia’s deep-rooted cultural roots and its enduring spirit.
