Pështymë

Pështymë is a term used in Albanian to refer to saliva, the watery fluid produced in the mouths of humans and other animals. It is a key component of the digestive process, beginning the breakdown of food through enzymes. Saliva also plays a role in lubricating the mouth, aiding in speech, and maintaining oral hygiene by washing away food particles and neutralizing acids.

The production of saliva is regulated by the autonomic nervous system. The sight, smell, or even thought of food can stimulate salivary glands to increase production. Conversely, stress or fear can inhibit saliva flow, leading to a dry mouth. Saliva contains various substances, including water, electrolytes, mucus, and enzymes such as amylase and lipase.

In some cultural contexts, pështymë can carry symbolic meanings. It might be associated with expressions of contempt, disgust, or defiance. However, in a biological and medical context, saliva is primarily understood for its crucial physiological functions. Disorders related to saliva production, such as xerostomia (dry mouth) or hypersalivation (excessive saliva), can have significant impacts on an individual's health and well-being, affecting eating, speaking, and oral health.
