Përshpejtuesit, known in English as accelerators, are devices used to propel charged particles to high speeds and energies. These particles, such as electrons, protons, or ions, are accelerated using electric and magnetic fields. The primary goal of accelerators is to study the fundamental structure of matter and the forces that govern it. By colliding particles at extremely high energies, scientists can observe the resulting debris, which often includes exotic subatomic particles not found in everyday matter.

There are two main categories of particle accelerators: linear accelerators and circular accelerators. Linear accelerators, or linacs, accelerate particles in a straight line. They consist of a series of electrodes that are pulsed with alternating voltage, creating an electric field that pushes the particles forward. Circular accelerators, such as cyclotrons and synchrotrons, bend the path of particles using magnetic fields, allowing them to travel in a spiral or circular path. This enables them to achieve higher energies with a more compact design compared to linacs of equivalent energy.

Particle accelerators have applications beyond fundamental physics research. They are used in medicine for cancer treatment (radiotherapy), in industry for material modification and sterilization, and in various scientific fields for isotope production and analysis. The development of accelerators has been a crucial factor in advancing our understanding of the universe and has led to numerous technological innovations.
