Përmirësimet refer to the Albanian practice of renovating, restoring, or improving older buildings and structures, often with a focus on preserving cultural heritage while integrating modern elements. This tradition reflects Albania’s historical and architectural diversity, particularly in urban centers like Tirana, Berat, and Gjirokastër, where Ottoman-era houses and communist-era apartment blocks coexist. The term itself combines the Albanian words *përmirësoj* ("to improve") and *-et* (a plural suffix), emphasizing collective efforts in community-driven projects.

Përmirësimet gained prominence in the post-communist era (1990s onward) as Albania underwent rapid urbanization and economic shifts. Many Albanians sought to revitalize neglected homes, using locally sourced materials like stone, wood, and traditional plaster techniques. This movement also aligned with Albania’s growing tourism sector, as restored buildings became attractions for visitors. However, the practice has faced challenges, including inconsistent preservation standards, economic constraints, and debates over authenticity versus modernization.
