Päätäisiä is a Finnish term that translates to "head lice" in English. It refers to Pediculus humanus capitis, a common ectoparasite that infests the scalp of humans. These tiny, wingless insects are about the size of a sesame seed and feed on human blood. They are not known to transmit diseases.

Head lice are spread through direct head-to-head contact. They can also be transmitted indirectly through shared personal items such as hats, combs, brushes, and towels, although this is less common. The primary symptom of a head louse infestation is itching of the scalp, which can be intense and lead to scratching. Scratching can sometimes result in secondary bacterial infections.

Diagnosis is typically made by visually inspecting the hair and scalp for live lice or nits (eggs). Nits are small, oval, and firmly attached to hair shafts close to the scalp. Treatment usually involves over-the-counter or prescription medicated shampoos, lotions, or rinses specifically designed to kill lice. It is important to follow treatment instructions carefully and to repeat treatment if necessary, as some treatments may not kill all lice or nits on the first application. Environmental decontamination, such as washing bedding and clothing in hot water, is also often recommended.
