Päätevastusten

Päätevastusten, often translated as terminating resistors, are passive electronic components used in electrical and electronic systems to match the impedance of a transmission line or circuit to the impedance of the source or load. This impedance matching is crucial for preventing signal reflections, which can lead to signal distortion, attenuation, and loss of power.

In applications like high-speed digital communication, radio frequency (RF) systems, and audio equipment, transmission lines have a characteristic impedance. When the impedance of the connected device, such as a transmitter output or a receiver input, differs from this characteristic impedance, a mismatch occurs. Päätevastusten are placed at the end of the transmission line, hence the name "terminating," to absorb any signal energy that would otherwise reflect back.

The value of a päätevastus is typically equal to the characteristic impedance of the transmission line it is terminating. For example, in many coaxial cable applications, the characteristic impedance is 50 ohms or 75 ohms, and the terminating resistor would be of the same value. By absorbing the reflected signal energy, the päätevastus ensures that the maximum amount of signal power is delivered to the intended destination and that the signal integrity is maintained. Without proper termination, reflections can cause issues like ghosting in video signals or data errors in digital communication.
