Päästeamet, known in English as the Estonian Rescue Board, is a government agency of Estonia responsible for fire safety, rescue, and civil protection. It operates nationwide and serves as a central authority within the public safety system, typically under the Ministry of the Interior. Its remit covers prevention, preparedness, and response to emergencies.

The agency’s main duties include enforcing fire safety regulations in buildings and workplaces, organizing and delivering professional fire and rescue services, and conducting search and rescue operations during fires, floods, traffic accidents, and other emergencies. It also carries out risk assessments, disaster preparedness planning, and public safety education to reduce hazards and improve resilience.

Organization and operations are structured around national leadership, with regional departments, fire safety offices, and coordination with local municipalities and volunteer fire brigades. Päästeamet collaborates with other public authorities, including police, health services, and border control, to provide integrated emergency response and civil protection. It also supports international cooperation in disaster relief and safety initiatives.

Legally, the agency operates under Estonian law and policy frameworks such as the Fire Safety Act and the Rescue Act. It is overseen by the Government and led by a director general, and it works to modernize firefighting infrastructure, rescue capabilities, and safety practices across the country.

In addition to direct response roles, Päästeamet engages in public information campaigns and training programs to promote safety awareness. It maintains close ties with the Emergency Response Centre and other partners to ensure coordinated and effective national and cross-border crisis management.
