Päällekkäisyretki

Päällekkäisyretki is a Finnish term that literally translates to "overlapping excursion" or "overlapping trip." It describes a type of recreational activity, often associated with hiking or outdoor exploration, where the intended path or route involves crossing over or revisiting previously covered terrain. This can be done intentionally to explore different aspects of an area, to gain a new perspective on familiar landscapes, or as a consequence of a poorly planned or complex route.

In some contexts, päällekkäisyretki might refer to a specific type of geocaching or orienteering challenge where finding a cache or completing a leg of a course requires traversing a section of ground that has already been visited. It can also be a descriptive term for a hike that, due to a missed turn or a desire to see something missed earlier, leads the participant back over ground they've already walked. While sometimes seen as inefficient, it can also offer opportunities for a deeper appreciation of the environment or the discovery of details that were overlooked on the first pass.
