Pääeläkelaitos

Pääeläkelaitos, meaning "Main Pension Institution" in Finnish, was a Finnish state-owned company established in 1922. Its primary role was to manage and administer various pension schemes, particularly for state employees. Over its operational history, Pääeläkelaitos played a significant part in shaping Finland's social security system.

The institution was responsible for collecting contributions, calculating pension benefits, and making pension payments to retirees. It aimed to ensure financial security for those who had served the state, providing a safety net for their later years. Over time, the scope of its responsibilities expanded to encompass different categories of public sector workers, reflecting the evolving needs of the Finnish welfare state.

In 1990, Pääeläkelaitos merged with the State Pension Board (Valtion eläkelautakunta) and the Municipal Pension Institution (Kunnallinen eläkelaitos) to form the Finnish Centre for Pensions (Kansan eläkealue, later known as Eläketurvakeskus, ETK). This consolidation aimed to streamline pension administration and create a more unified system for managing pension funds in Finland. The legacy of Pääeläkelaitos is thus embedded within the current structure of Finnish pension provision.
